“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
said: ‘Whoever performs twelve Rak’ah (of Sunnah) each day, a
house
will be built for him in Paradise: two Rak’ah before Fajr,
two Rak’ah
before the Zuhr, two Rak’ah after the Zuhr, two
Rak’ah, I think he
said, before ‘Asr, two Rak’ah after Maghrib,
and I think he said two
Rak’ah after the ‘Isha’.’”
Chapter 101: What was narrated concerning two Rak’ah before Fajr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ إِذَا أَضَاءَ الْفَجْرُ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ .
It was
narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that when the dawn illuminated, the
Prophet
(ﷺ) would pray two Rak’ah.
Chapter 101: What was narrated concerning two Rak’ah before Fajr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ إِذَا نُودِيَ لِصَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُومَ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ .
It was
narrated from Hafsah bint ‘Umar that when the call for the
Subh
prayer was given, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would pray two
short
Rak’ah before going to the prayer.
Chapter 101: What was narrated concerning two Rak’ah before Fajr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated that ‘Ali said:
حَدَّثَنَا الْخَلِيلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو أَبُو عَمْرٍو، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ عِنْدَ الإِقَامَةِ .
“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to perform
two
Rak’ah at the time of the Iqamah.”
Chapter 102: What was narrated concerning what is to be recited in the two Rak’ah before Fajr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَادَةَ الْوَاسِطِيَّانِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ رَمَقْتُ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ شَهْرًا فَكَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ {قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ} وَ {قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ} .
“I watched the Prophet (ﷺ) for
a
month, and in the two Rak’ah before Fajr he used to recite: “Say:
O
you disbelievers!” [Al-Kafirun (109)] and “Say: Allah is One.”
[Al-
Ikhlas (112)]
Chapter 102: What was narrated concerning what is to be recited in the two Rak’ah before Fajr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated that ‘Aishah said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ " نِعْمَ السُّورَتَانِ هُمَا يُقْرَأُ بِهِمَا فِي رَكْعَتَىِ الْفَجْرِ {قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ} وَ {قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ} .
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used
to
perform two Rak’ah before Fajr, and he used to say: ‘The best two
Surah to recite in the two Rak’ah of Fajr are: “Say: Allah is
One”
[Al-Ikhlas (112)] and “Say: O you disbelievers.”

narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
said:
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَزْهَرُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ أَبُو بِشْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ
" إِذَا أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ، فَلاَ صَلاَةَ إِلاَّ الْمَكْتُوبَةُ " .

“Once the Iqamah has been called, there should be no prayer but

It was
narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Sarjis that the Messenger of Allah
(ﷺ) saw a man performing the two Rak’ah before the morning prayer
while he himself was performing prayer. When he had finished praying
he said to him:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ رَأَى رَجُلاً يُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ صَلاَةِ الْغَدَاةِ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَالَ لَهُ:
" بِأَىِّ صَلاَتَيْكَ اعْتَدَدْتَ؟ " .
“Which of your two prayers did you intend to be
counted (i.e., accepted)?”

narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Malik bin Buhainah said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَرْوَانَ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْعُثْمَانِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَالِكِ ابْنِ بُحَيْنَةَ، قَالَ مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ بِرَجُلٍ وَقَدْ أُقِيمَتْ صَلاَةُ الصُّبْحِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَكَلَّمَهُ بِشَىْءٍ لاَ أَدْرِي مَا هُوَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ أَحَطْنَا بِهِ نَقُولُ لَهُ مَاذَا قَالَ لَكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ قَالَ لِي
" يُوشِكُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الْفَجْرَ أَرْبعًا " .
“The
Prophet
(ﷺ) passed by a man who was praying when the Iqamah for Subh
prayer
had been called, and he said something to him, I do not know
what he
said. When he finished, we surrounded the man and asked him:
‘What
did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say to you?’ He said: ‘He said
to me: “Soon one of you will pray Fajr with four Rak’ah.’”
Chapter 104: What was narrated concerning the one who misses the two Rak’ah before Fajr Prayer when should he make them up? - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated that Qais bin ‘Amr said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ رَأَى النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ رَجُلاً يُصَلِّي بَعْدَ صَلاَةِ الصُّبْحِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ
" أَصَلاَةَ الصُّبْحِ مَرَّتَيْنِ؟ " . فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ صَلَّيْتُ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهَا فَصَلَّيْتُهُمَا . قَالَ فَسَكَتَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ .
“The Prophet (ﷺ) saw a man
praying two Rak’ah after the Subh prayer and said, ‘Is the Subh
prayer
to be offered twice?’ The man said to him: ‘I did not pray
the two
Rak’ah before it, so I prayed them (now).’ The Messenger
of Allah
(ﷺ) remained silent.”
Chapter 104: What was narrated concerning the one who misses the two Rak’ah before Fajr Prayer when should he make them up? - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَيَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ كَاسِبٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ نَامَ عَنْ رَكْعَتَىِ الْفَجْرِ. فَقَضَاهُمَا بَعْدَ مَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ .
It was
narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) slept and
missed
the two Rak’ah before Fajr, so he made them up after the sun
had
risen.
Chapter 105: Four Rak’ah before the Zuhr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated from Qabus that his father said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ قَابُوسَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ أَرْسَلَ أَبِي إِلَى عَائِشَةَ أَىُّ صَلاَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ يُوَاظِبَ عَلَيْهَا؟ قَالَتْ: كَانَ يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ. يُطِيلُ فِيهِنَّ الْقِيَامَ، وَيُحْسِنُ فِيهِنَّ الرُّكُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ .
“My father sent word
to
‘Aishah, asking which prayer the Prophet (ﷺ) most liked to
perform regularly. She said: ‘He used to perform four Rak’ah
before
the Zuhr, in which he would stand for a long time and bow and
prostrate perfectly.’”
Chapter 105: Four Rak’ah before the Zuhr - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ مُعَتِّبٍ الضَّبِّيِّ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ سَهْمِ بْنِ مِنْجَابٍ، عَنْ قَزَعَةَ، عَنْ قَرْثَعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ يُصَلِّي قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ أَرْبَعًا إِذَا زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ لاَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِتَسْلِيمٍ وَقَالَ
" إِنَّ أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ تُفْتَحُ إِذَا زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ " .
It was
narrated from Abu Ayyub that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to perform
four
Rak’ah before the Zuhr when the sun had passed its zenith, and he
did not separate them with a Taslim. He said, “The gates of heaven
are
opened when the sun passes its zenith.”
“Mu’awiyah sent word
to Umm Salamah, and I went with his envoy who put the question to Umm
Salamah. She said: ‘While the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was
performing
ablution for the Zuhr in my house and he had sent a Sa’i,*
the
Muhajirun gathered around him in large numbers, and he was busy
dealing with them. When a knock on the door came, he went out and
performed the Zuhr, then he sat and distributed what had been brought
to him.’ She said: ‘He continued doing that until the ‘Asr.
Then he
came into my house and performed two Rak’ah. Then he said:
“The matter
of the Sa’i kept me from praying them after Zuhr, so
I prayed them
after ‘Asr.”
“We asked ‘Ali
about the voluntary (prayer) of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) during the
day. He said: ‘You will not be able.’ We said: ‘Inform us of
it, we will do what we can of it?’ So he said: ‘When he prayed
the Fajr he would delay praying any more. When the sun appeared over
there (west) – like it appears here, meaning in the direction of
the east, about the amount for the ‘Asr prayer from there, meaning
in the direction of the west, meaning before the Maghrib – he would
stand and perform two Rak’ah* then he would delay praying until the
sun appeared over there (west), meaning in the direction of the east,
about the amount of the Zuhr prayer from there, then he would stand
and perform four. And, four before the Zuhr when the sun passed the
zenith, and two Rak’ah after it, and, four before the ‘Asr,
separating between every two Rak’ah with Taslim** upon the angels
that are close (to Allah), the Prophets, and those who follow them
among the Muslims and the believers.’”
'Ali said: "That is sixteen Rak'ah of voluntary prayer which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) performed during the day. And there are very few who offer them regularly."
Waki` said: “My father added: Habib bin Abu Thabit said: ‘O Abu Ishaq, this mosque filled with gold would not be dearer to me than this Hadith of yours.’”
* Meaning, when the sun was low above the eastern horizon. That is the time of the Duha.
** Meaning the Tashah-hud.
Chapter 110: What was narrated concerning the two Rak’ah before the Maghrib - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، وَوَكِيعٌ، عَنْ كَهْمَسٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ " بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلاَةٌ " . قَالَهَا ثَلاَثًا قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ " لِمَنْ شَاءَ " .
“The Prophet of
Allah
(ﷺ) said: ‘Between every two Adhans there is a prayer.’ He
said
it three times, and on the third time he said, ‘For those who
wish.’”*
Chapter 110: What was narrated concerning the two Rak’ah before the Maghrib - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
‘Ali
bin Zaid bin Jud’an said:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ إِنْ كَانَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ لَيُؤَذِّنُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَيُرَى أَنَّهَا الإِقَامَةُ مِنْ كَثْرَةِ مَنْ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ .
“I heard Anas bin Malik say: ‘The
Mu
’adh-dhin would call the Adhan during the time of the Messenger
of
Allah (ﷺ), and one would think that it was the Iqamah because
there
were so many people who stood and performed the two Rak’ah
before the
Maghrib.”
Chapter 111: Concerning the two Rak’ah after the Maghrib - كتاب إقامة الصلاة والسنة فيها
It was
narrated that Rafi’ bin Khadij said:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ الضَّحَّاكِ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ، قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فِي بَنِي عَبْدِ الأَشْهَلِ فَصَلَّى بِنَا الْمَغْرِبَ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ
" ارْكَعُوا هَاتَيْنِ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ " .
“We came to the Messenger
of
Allah (ﷺ) with Banu ‘Abdul-Ashhal, and he led us in praying the
Maghrib in our mosque. Then he said: ‘Pray these two Rak’ah in
your
houses.’”
