Chapter 24: Kissing by a fasting person - كتاب الصوم

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ ابْنَةِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّهَا ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَتْ بَيْنَمَا أَنَا مَعَ، رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي الْخَمِيلَةِ إِذْ حِضْتُ فَانْسَلَلْتُ، فَأَخَذْتُ ثِيَابَ حِيضَتِي فَقَالَ
" مَا لَكِ أَنُفِسْتِ ". قُلْتُ نَعَمْ. فَدَخَلْتُ مَعَهُ فِي الْخَمِيلَةِ، وَكَانَتْ هِيَ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَغْتَسِلاَنِ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ، وَكَانَ يُقَبِّلُهَا وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ.
(daughter of Um Salama) that her mother said, "While I was (lying) with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) underneath
a woolen sheet, I got the menstruation, and then slipped away and put on the clothes (which I used to
wear) in menses. He asked, "What is the matter? Did you get your menses?" I replied in the
affirmative and then entered underneath that woolen sheet. I and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to take a bath
from one water pot and he used to kiss me while he was fasting."

Narrated `Aisha:
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، وَأَبِي، بَكْرٍ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُدْرِكُهُ الْفَجْرُ {جُنُبًا} فِي رَمَضَانَ، مِنْ غَيْرِ حُلُمٍ فَيَغْتَسِلُ وَيَصُومُ.
(At times) in Ramadan the Prophet (ﷺ) used to take a bath in the morning not because of a wet dream and
would continue his fast.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ سُمَىٍّ، مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، كُنْتُ أَنَا وَأَبِي،، فَذَهَبْتُ مَعَهُ، حَتَّى دَخَلْنَا عَلَى عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ أَشْهَدُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِنْ كَانَ لَيُصْبِحُ جُنُبًا مِنْ جِمَاعٍ غَيْرِ احْتِلاَمٍ، ثُمَّ يَصُومُهُ.
ثُمَّ دَخَلْنَا عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، فَقَالَتْ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ.
My father and I went to `Aisha and she said, "I testify that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at times used to get up in
the morning in a state of Janaba from sexual intercourse, not from a wet dream and then he would fast
that day." Then he went to Um Salama and she also narrated a similar thing.

Chapter 26: If a person observing Saum ate or drank forgetfully - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Abu Huraira:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ
" إِذَا نَسِيَ فَأَكَلَ وَشَرِبَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّمَا أَطْعَمَهُ اللَّهُ وَسَقَاهُ ".
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he
has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah."
I saw `Uthman performing ablution; he washed his hands thrice, rinsed his mouth and then washed his
nose, by putting water in it and then blowing it out, and washed his face thrice, and then washed his
right forearm up to the elbow thrice, and then the left-forearm up to the elbow thrice, then smeared his
head with water, washed his right foot thrice, and then his left foot thrice and said, "I saw Allah's
Apostle performing ablution similar to my present ablution, and then he said, 'Whoever performs
ablution like my present ablution and then offers two rak`at in which he does not think of worldly
things, all his previous sins will be forgiven."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُنِيرٍ، سَمِعَ يَزِيدَ بْنَ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ـ هُوَ ابْنُ سَعِيدٍ ـ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْقَاسِمِ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ بْنِ خُوَيْلِدٍ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ تَقُولُ إِنَّ رَجُلاً أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ احْتَرَقَ. قَالَ " مَالَكَ ". قَالَ أَصَبْتُ أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ. فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِمِكْتَلٍ، يُدْعَى الْعَرَقَ فَقَالَ " أَيْنَ الْمُحْتَرِقُ ". قَالَ أَنَا. قَالَ " تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا ".
A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said that he had been burnt (ruined). The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him what was
the matter. He replied, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting)."
Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he asked, "Where is the burnt (ruined)
man?" He replied, "I am present." The Prophet (ﷺ) told him to give that basket in charity (as expiation).

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكْتُ. قَالَ " مَا لَكَ ". قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا ". قَالَ لاَ. قَالَ " فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ". قَالَ لاَ. فَقَالَ " فَهَلْ تَجِدُ إِطْعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ". قَالَ لاَ. قَالَ فَمَكَثَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِعَرَقٍ فِيهَا تَمْرٌ ـ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ ـ قَالَ " أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ ". فَقَالَ أَنَا. قَالَ " خُذْهَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ ". فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا ـ يُرِيدُ الْحَرَّتَيْنِ ـ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي، فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ " أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ ".
While we were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) a man came and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have been ruined."
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my
wife while I was fasting." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied
in the negative. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in
the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the
negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was
brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet (ﷺ)
said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a
person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are
poorer than I." The Prophet (ﷺ) smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your
family with it."

Chapter 31: To feed family from sin expiation (kaffarah) if they are needy. - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Abu Huraira:
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ إِنَّ الأَخِرَ وَقَعَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ. فَقَالَ " أَتَجِدُ مَا تُحَرِّرُ رَقَبَةً ". قَالَ لاَ. قَالَ " فَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ". قَالَ لاَ. قَالَ " أَفَتَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ بِهِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ". قَالَ لاَ. قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ ـ وَهُوَ الزَّبِيلُ ـ قَالَ " أَطْعِمْ هَذَا عَنْكَ ". قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا. قَالَ " فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ ".
A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife on Ramadan (while
fasting)." The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative.
The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. He
asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. (Abu Huraira
added): Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said (to that man), "Feed (poor
people) with this by way of atonement." He said, "(Should I feed it) to poorer people than we? There
is no poorer house than ours between its (Medina's) mountains." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Then feed your
family with it."

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم احْتَجَمَ، وَهْوَ مُحْرِمٌ وَاحْتَجَمَ وَهْوَ صَائِمٌ.
The Prophet (ﷺ) was cupped while he was in the state of lhram, and also while he was observing a fast.

Chapter 33: To observe Saum (fast) or not during journeys - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Ibn Abi `Aufa:
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، سَمِعَ ابْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي سَفَرٍ فَقَالَ لِرَجُلٍ " انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لِي ". قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الشَّمْسُ. قَالَ " انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لِي ". قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الشَّمْسُ. قَالَ " انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لِي ". فَنَزَلَ، فَجَدَحَ لَهُ، فَشَرِبَ، ثُمَّ رَمَى بِيَدِهِ هَا هُنَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ " إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ اللَّيْلَ أَقْبَلَ مِنْ هَا هُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ". تَابَعَهُ جَرِيرٌ وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي سَفَرٍ.
We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on a journey. He said to a man, "Get down and mix Sawiq
(powdered barley) with water for me." The man said, "The sun (has not set yet), O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)."
The Prophet (ﷺ) again said to him, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for me." The man again said, "O
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The sun!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him (for the third time) "Get down and mix Sawiq with
water for me." The man dismounted and mixed Sawiq with water for him. The Prophet (ﷺ) drank it and
then beckoned with his hand (towards the East) and said, "When you see the night falling from this
side, then a fasting person should break his fast."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّ حَمْزَةَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الأَسْلَمِيَّ قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَأَصُومُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَكَانَ كَثِيرَ الصِّيَامِ. فَقَالَ
" إِنْ شِئْتَ فَصُمْ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَفْطِرْ ".
(the wife of the Prophet) Hamza bin `Amr Al-Aslami asked the Prophet, "Should I fast while
traveling?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "You may fast if you wish, and you may not fast if you wish."

Chapter 34: If a person observed Saum for some days and then went on a journey. - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَرَجَ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَصَامَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ الْكَدِيدَ أَفْطَرَ، فَأَفْطَرَ النَّاسُ. قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَالْكَدِيدُ مَاءٌ بَيْنَ عُسْفَانَ وَقُدَيْدٍ.
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) set out for Mecca in Ramadan and he fasted, and when he reached Al-Kadid, he broke
his fast and the people (with him) broke their fast too. (Abu `Abdullah said, "Al-Kadid is a land
covered with water between Usfan and Qudaid.")

Narrated Abu Ad-Darda:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فِي يَوْمٍ حَارٍّ حَتَّى يَضَعَ الرَّجُلُ يَدَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْحَرِّ، وَمَا فِينَا صَائِمٌ إِلاَّ مَا كَانَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَابْنِ رَوَاحَةَ.
We set out with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on one of his journeys on a very hot day, and it was so hot that one
had to put his hand over his head because of the severity of heat. None of us was fasting except the
Prophet and Ibn Rawaha.

Chapter 36: It is not righteousness to observe Saum on a journey - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهم ـ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي سَفَرٍ، فَرَأَى زِحَامًا، وَرَجُلاً قَدْ ظُلِّلَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ " مَا هَذَا ". فَقَالُوا صَائِمٌ. فَقَالَ " لَيْسَ مِنَ الْبِرِّ الصَّوْمُ فِي السَّفَرِ ".
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was on a journey and saw a crowd of people, and a man was being shaded (by them).
He asked, "What is the matter?" They said, "He (the man) is fasting." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It is not
righteousness that you fast on a journey."

Chapter 37: Not to criticize each other for observing Saum or not (on journeys) - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الطَّوِيلِ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ كُنَّا نُسَافِرُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَلَمْ يَعِبِ الصَّائِمُ عَلَى الْمُفْطِرِ، وَلاَ الْمُفْطِرُ عَلَى الصَّائِمِ.
We used to travel with the Prophet (ﷺ) and neither did the fasting persons criticize those who were not
fasting, nor did those who were not fasting criticize the fasting ones.

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى مَكَّةَ، فَصَامَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عُسْفَانَ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى يَدَيْهِ لِيُرِيَهُ النَّاسَ فَأَفْطَرَ، حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ، وَذَلِكَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ قَدْ صَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَأَفْطَرَ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ.
Ibn `Abbas said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) set out from Medina to Mecca and he fasted till he reached 'Usfan,
where he asked for water and raised his hand to let the people see him, and then broke the fast, and did
not fast after that till he reached Mecca, and that happened in Ramadan." Ibn `Abbas used to say,
"Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (sometimes) fasted and (sometimes) did not fast during the journeys so whoever
wished to fast could fast, and whoever wished not to fast, could do so."

Hadith 1949
Chapter 39: (The Statement of Allah تعالى): “And as for those who can fast with difficulty (e.g. the aged etc.) they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskin (poor person) (for every day).” (V.2:184) - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Nafi`:
حَدَّثَنَا عَيَّاشٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الأَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَرَأَ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مَسَاكِينَ. قَالَ هِيَ مَنْسُوخَةٌ.
Ibn `Umar recited the verse: "They had a choice either to fast or to feed a poor person for every day,
and said that the order of this Verse was canceled.

Chapter 40: To make up for the missed days of fasting - كتاب الصوم
Narrated `Aisha:
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ تَقُولُ كَانَ يَكُونُ عَلَىَّ الصَّوْمُ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، فَمَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَقْضِيَ إِلاَّ فِي شَعْبَانَ. قَالَ يَحْيَى الشُّغْلُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ أَوْ بِالنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم.
Sometimes I missed some days of Ramadan, but could not fast in lieu of them except in the month of
Sha'ban." Said Yahya, a sub-narrator, "She used to be busy serving the Prophet (ﷺ) ."

Chapter 42: Can somebody else observe Saum instead of the dead? - كتاب الصوم
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ، وَعَلَيْهَا صَوْمُ شَهْرٍ، أَفَأَقْضِيهِ عَنْهَا قَالَ
" نَعَمْ ـ قَالَ ـ فَدَيْنُ اللَّهِ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُقْضَى ". قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ فَقَالَ الْحَكَمُ وَسَلَمَةُ، وَنَحْنُ جَمِيعًا جُلُوسٌ حِينَ حَدَّثَ مُسْلِمٌ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ـ قَالاَ ـ سَمِعْنَا مُجَاهِدًا يَذْكُرُ هَذَا عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ. وَيُذْكَرُ عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، وَمُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ، وَسَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، وَعَطَاءٍ، وَمُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِنَّ أُخْتِي مَاتَتْ. وَقَالَ يَحْيَى وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ. وَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا صَوْمُ نَذْرٍ. وَقَالَ أَبُو حَرِيزٍ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَاتَتْ أُمِّي وَعَلَيْهَا صَوْمُ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا.
A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! My mother died and she ought to have
fasted one month (for her missed Ramadan). Shall I fast on her behalf?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied in the
affirmative and said, "Allah's debts have more right to be paid." In another narration a woman is
reported to have said, "My sister died..."
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: A woman said to the Prophet (ﷺ) "My mother died and she had vowed to fast but
she didn't fast." In another narration Ibn `Abbas is reported to have said, "A woman said to the
Prophet, "My mother died while she ought to have fasted for fifteen days."

Chapter 43: When to break the Saum (fast)? - كتاب الصوم
Narrated `Umar bin Al-Khattab:
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ، سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم
" إِذَا أَقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا، وَأَدْبَرَ النَّهَارُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا، وَغَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ، فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ".
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun
sets, then the fasting person should break his fast."
