Musnad Ahmad

It was narrated that ‘Ali said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ يَعْنِي الرَّازِيَّ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنْ اللَّيْلِ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً سِوَى الْمَكْتُوبَةِ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray sixteen rak`ahs at night apart from the prescribed prayers.

It was narrated that `Asim bin Damrah said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ الرَّازِيُّ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، وَالْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، قَالَ أَتَيْنَا عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقُلْنَا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَلَا تُحَدِّثُنَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَطَوُّعَهُ فَقَالَ وَأَيُّكُمْ يُطِيقُهُ قَالُوا نَأْخُذُ مِنْهُ مَا أَطَقْنَا قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنْ النَّهَارِ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً سِوَى الْمَكْتُوبَةِ‏.‏

We came to `Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) and said: O Ameer al-Mu`mineen, why don`t you tell us about the voluntary prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? He said: Who among you can do that? They said: We will take what we can do. He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray sixteen rak`ahs during the day apart from the Prescribed prayers.

It was narrated from ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ، وَشَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ عَفَوْتُ لَكُمْ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ فَأَدُّوا رُبُعَ الْعُشُورِ‏.‏

“I have relieved you of zakah on horses and slaves, so give one quarter of one tenth.”

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا عَلِيُّ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ لَكَ مَا أُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِي وَأَكْرَهُ لَكَ مَا أَكْرَهُ لِنَفْسِي لَا تَقْرَأْ وَأَنْتَ رَاكِعٌ وَلَا وَأَنْتَ سَاجِدٌ وَلَا تُصَلِّ وَأَنْتَ عَاقِصٌ شَعْرَكَ فَإِنَّهُ كِفْلُ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلَا تُقْعِ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ وَلَا تَعْبَثْ بِالْحَصَى وَلَا تَفْتَرِشْ ذِرَاعَيْكَ وَلَا تَفْتَحْ عَلَى الْإِمَامِ وَلَا تَتَخَتَّمْ بِالذَّهَبِ وَلَا تَلْبَسْ الْقَسِّيَّ وَلَا تَرْكَبْ عَلَى الْمَيَاثِرِ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: `O ‘Ali, I love for you what I love for myself and l hate for you what I hate for myself. Do not recite Qur`an whilst bowing or whilst prostrating, do not pray with your hair twisted or braided and gathered up on the head, for that is the place where the Shaitan sits; do not sit like a dog between the two prostrations [putting the feet up and sitting on them]; do not play with the pebbles; do not lay your forearm along the ground; do not prompt the imam; do not wear gold rings; do not wear garments made from a blend of linen and silk, and do not ride on red saddle cloths.`

It was narrated that Shuraih bin Hani said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ، قَالَ أَتَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَسْأَلُهَا عَنْ الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَتْ عَلَيْكَ بِابْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَاسْأَلْهُ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَافِرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ جَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ لِلْمُسَافِرِ وَيَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً لِلْمُقِيمِ‏.‏

I came to `A`ishah (رضي الله عنها) to ask her about the khuffain (leather slippers). She said: Go to Ibn Abi Talib, for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). So I went to him and asked him, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set three days and nights for the traveller and one day and night for one who is not travelling.

It was narrated that Shutair bin Shakal al-`Absi said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى، عَنْ شُتَيْرِ بْنِ شَكَلٍ الْعَبْسِيِّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْأَحْزَابِ صَلَّيْنَا الْعَصْرَ بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَغَلُونَا عَنْ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ مَلَأَ اللَّهُ قُبُورَهُمْ وَأَجْوَافَهُمْ نَارًا‏.‏

I heard `Ali (رضي الله عنه) say: On the day of al-Ahzab, we prayed ‘Asr between Maghrib and `Isha`. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: `They distracted us from the middle prayer, ‘Asr, prayer, may Allah fill their graves and stomachs with fire.`

It was narrated from `Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ قَالَ إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ وَلَا بَوْلٌ. و حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ قَالَ و حَدَّثَنَاه شَيْبَانُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ حَبَّةَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبَّةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيَّ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ مِثْلَهُ نَحْوَهُ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ وَكَانَ أَبِي لَا يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ يَعْنِي كَانَ حَدِيثُهُ لَا يَسْوَى عِنْدَهُ شَيْئًا‏.‏

“Jibreel (عليه السلام) came to me but did not enter upon me.` The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: `What prevented you from entering?” He said: We do not enter a house in which there is an image or urine. It was narrated from ‘Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: `Jibreel (عليه السلام) came to me and greeted me.` And he narrated a similar hadeeth.

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْبَيْسَرِيُّ الْقُرَشِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تُبْرِزْ فَخِذَكَ وَلَا تَنْظُرْ إِلَى فَخِذِ حَيٍّ وَلَا مَيِّتٍ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: “Do not let your thigh show, and do not look at the thigh of another person, living or dead.`

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، وَحُسَيْنٌ، وَأَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ هُبَيْرَةَ بْنِ يَرِيمَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِفَاطِمَةَ لَوْ أَتَيْتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلْتِيهِ خَادِمًا فَقَدْ أَجْهَدَكِ الطَّحْنُ وَالْعَمَلُ قَالَ حُسَيْنٌ إِنَّهُ قَدْ جَهَدَكِ الطَّحْنُ وَالْعَمَلُ وَكَذَلِكَ قَالَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ قَالَتْ فَانْطَلِقْ مَعِي قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْتُ مَعَهَا فَسَأَلْنَاهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا أَدُلُّكُمَا عَلَى مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمَا مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِذَا أَوَيْتُمَا إِلَى فِرَاشِكُمَا فَسَبِّحَا اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَاحْمَدَاهُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَكَبِّرَاهُ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ فَتِلْكَ مِائَةٌ عَلَى اللِّسَانِ وَأَلْفٌ فِي الْمِيزَانِ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مَا تَرَكْتُهَا بَعْدَمَا سَمِعْتُهَا مِنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ قَالَ وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ‏.‏

l said to Fatimah: Why don`t you go to the Prophet (ﷺ) and ask him for a servant, for grinding corn and work have exhausted you, She said: Come with me. So l went with her and we asked him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than that? When you go to your bed, glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times and magnify Him thirty-four times. That is one hundred on the lips and one thousand in the Balance.” ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: I never omitted that after I heard it from the Prophet (ﷺ). A man said: Not even on the night of Siffeen? He said: Not even on the night of Siffeen.

It was narrated that ‘Ata’ bin as-Sa`ib said:

حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ وَقَدْ صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ فَقُلْتُ لَوْ قُمْتَ إِلَى فِرَاشِكَ كَانَ أَوْطَأَ لَكَ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَنْ صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَصَلَاتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ وَمَنْ يَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَصَلَاتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ‏.‏

l entered upon Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman as-Sulami who had prayed Fajr and was sitting in the mosque.I said: Why don`t you go to your bed, for it will be more comfortable for you? He said: I heard `Ali (رضي الله عنه) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “Whoever pray Fajr, then sits in the place where he has prayed, the angels will send blessings upon him and their blessings upon him will be: ‘O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, have mercy on him.` And whoever waits for the prayer, the angels will send blessings upon him and their blessings upon him will be: `O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him.”

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ مَرْزُوقٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الضُّحَى حِينَ كَانَتْ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ الْمَشْرِقِ مِنْ مَكَانِهَا مِنْ الْمَغْرِبِ صَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ‏.‏

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Duha when the sun was as high in the east as it is in the west at the time of ‘Asr prayer.

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي سَمِينَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ سَأَلَ مَسْأَلَةً عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى اسْتَكْثَرَ بِهَا مِنْ رَضْفِ جَهَنَّمَ قَالُوا مَا ظَهْرُ غِنًى قَالَ عَشَاءُ لَيْلَةٍ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: `Whoever asks people to give him when he is independent of means is asking for more red hot stones of Hell` They said: what does independent of means mean? He said: “Having sufficient food for the evening (dinner).”

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، عَنْ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ كُلِّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنْ السَّبُعِ وَكُلِّ ذِي مِخْلَبٍ مِنْ الطَّيْرِ وَعَنْ ثَمَنِ الْمَيْتَةِ وَعَنْ لَحْمِ الْحُمُرِ الْأَهْلِيَّةِ وَعَنْ مَهْرِ الْبَغِيِّ وَعَنْ عَسْبِ الْفَحْلِ وَعَنْ الْمَيَاثِرِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ‏.‏

It was narrated from ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade every wild animal that has fangs and every bird that has talons, the price of dead meat, the flesh of donkeys, the wages of a prostitute, the stud fee of the stallion and purple saddle cloths.

It was narrated that Tariq bin Ziyad said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ سَارَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى النَّهْرَوَانِ فَقَتَلَ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ اطْلُبُوا فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ سَيَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِكَلِمَةِ الْحَقِّ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنْ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنْ الرَّمِيَّةِ سِيمَاهُمْ أَوْ فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ فِي يَدِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ سُودٌ إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ شَرَّ النَّاسِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِمْ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ قَالَ ثُمَّ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا الْمُخْدَجَ قَالَ فَخَرَرْنَا سُجُودًا وَخَرَّ عَلِيٌّ سَاجِدًا مَعَنَا‏.‏

‘Ali marched to an-Nahrawan and killed the Khawarij. Then he said: Look, for the Prophet (ﷺ) said: `There will come a people who will speak the word of truth but it will not go any further than their throats; they will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes out of the prey. Their sign - or among them - will be a black man with a deformed arm, on which there are black hairs. If he is among them, then you will have killed the worst of people; if he is not among them, then you will have killed the best of people.” Then we found the one with the deformity, and we fell down in prostration and ‘Ali fell down in prostration with us. .

It was narrated that `Amr bin Sufyan said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُفْيَانَ، قَالَ خَطَبَ رَجُلٌ يَوْمَ الْبَصْرَةِ حِينَ ظَهَرَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ هَذَا الْخَطِيبُ الشَّحْشَحُ سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ بَعْدَهُمْ يَصْنَعُ اللَّهُ فِيهَا مَا شَاءَ‏.‏

A man gave a speech when ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) prevailed on the day of Basrah, and ‘Ali said: This speaker does not know what he is talking about. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came first, Abu Bakr came second and `Umar came third. Then we got involved in turmoil after they were gone, and Allah will judge concerning it as He wills.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ الْحَنَفِيِّ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ قِيلَ لِعَلِيٍّ وَلِأَبِي بَكْرٍ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ مَعَ أَحَدِكُمَا جِبْرِيلُ وَمَعَ الْآخَرِ مِيكَائِيلُ وَإِسْرَافِيلُ مَلَكٌ عَظِيمٌ يَشْهَدُ الْقِتَالَ أَوْ قَالَ يَشْهَدُ الصَّفَّ‏.‏

It was narrated from Abu Salih al-Hanafi that It was said to ‘Ali and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنهما) on the day of Badr. Jibreel is with one of you and Mika`eel is with the other, and Israfeel, a mighty angel, is present at the fight - or he said, is present in the ranks.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ‏.‏

It was narrated from `Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed four [rak`ahs] before Zuhr.

It was narrated that Qais al-Kharifi said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ، بَيَّاعِ السَّابِرِيِّ عَنْ قَيْسٍ الْخَارِفِيِّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ فَكَانَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ‏.‏

I heard ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) say on this minbar. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came first, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) came second and `Umar (رضي الله عنه) came third; then we got involved in turmoil, and it was what Allah willed.

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدُوَيْهِ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ، مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَوَّلِهِ وَأَوْسَطِهِ وَآخِرِهِ وَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Witr at all times of the night, at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Then in the end his Witr was at the end of the night.

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ الْهِلَالِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنْ التَّطَوُّعِ ثَمَانِيَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَبِالنَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً‏.‏

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray eight rak`ahs of voluntary prayer and during the day twelve rak`ahs.

It was narrated that `Asim bin Damrah as-Salooli said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صَنْدَلٍ، وَسُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، جَمِيعًا فِي سَنَةِ سِتٍّ وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ السَّلُولِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَلَا إِنَّ الْوَتْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ كَصَلَاتِكُمْ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْتَرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ أَوْتِرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ وَتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ وَهَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَنْدَلٍ وَمَعْنَاهُمَا وَاحِدٌ‏.‏

‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: Verily, Witr is not a must like your prescribed prayers, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Witr, then he said: “Pray Witr, O people of the Qur`an. Pray Witr, for Allah is One and loves that which is odd numbered.”

It was narrated that Katheer bin Nafi’ an-Nawwa` said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا فِطْرٌ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ النَّوَّاءِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُلَيْلٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَبْلِي نَبِيٌّ إِلَّا قَدْ أُعْطِيَ سَبْعَةَ رُفَقَاءَ نُجَبَاءَ وُزَرَاءَ وَإِنِّي أُعْطِيتُ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ حَمْزَةُ وَجَعْفَرٌ وَعَلِيٌّ وَحَسَنٌ وَحُسَيْنٌ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَالْمِقْدَادُ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَأَبُو ذَرٍّ وَحُذَيْفَةُ وَسَلْمَانُ وَعَمَّارٌ وَبِلَالٌ‏.‏

I heard ‘Abdullah bin Mulail say: I heard Ali (رضي الله عنه) say: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: `There is no Prophet who came before me but he was given seven chiefs, advisors and nobles, but I have been given fourteen. Hamzah, Ja`far, `Ali, Hasan, Husain, Abu Bakr, ʻUmar, al-Miqdad, Hudhaifah, Salman, `Ammar and Bilal”. (رضي الله عنهم)

It was narrated that ’Abd Khair said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ، قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى النَّعْلَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ لَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَدَمَيْنِ هُوَ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا‏.‏

I saw Ali (رضي الله عنه) doing wudoo’ and wiping over his shoes. Then he said: “If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) doing what you have seen me do, I would have thought that the bottoms of the feet were more deserving of being wiped than their tops”.

It was narrated that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَيْسَ فِي مَالٍ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ‏.‏

No zakah is due on wealth until one year has passed.

It was narrated that ‘Asim bin Damrah said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ، قَالَ قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ إِنَّ الشِّيعَةَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَرْجِعُ قَالَ كَذَبَ أُولَئِكَ الْكَذَّابُونَ لَوْ عَلِمْنَا ذَاكَ مَا تَزَوَّجَ نِسَاؤُهُ وَلَا قَسَمْنَا مِيرَاثَهُ‏.‏

I said to al-Hasan bin `Ali: The Shi`ah claim that ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) will return! He said. Those liars are lying. If we knew that, his wives would not have got married and we would not have divided his estate.
